The men represented in these images are symbols of patriarchy. I have emphasized this by using the heads of Bessie Head and Olive Schreiner, whose novels contain atypical depictions of women of the eras in which they wrote... women who didn't follow the rules society set out for them. The backgrounds reflect the settings of their novels: the huts of Botswana and the farmlands of the Karoo.
These images are informed by my own experience of being mugged last year. It speaks to the fact that I wish I had fought back like the women depicted in these images; instead of just screaming, also acting. These images are celebrations of the women who have fought back against violence and by extension, the patriarchy.
